Sisupalgarh is an ancient fortified urban site on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar in Odisha, India, recognised as one of the subcontinent’s early historic towns dating to the early centuries BCE and CE. It is an important archaeological example of an organised, fortified settlement from that period.
Visitors can see the remains of massive earthen ramparts, the outline of the original fortification and low archaeological mounds within the enclosure. The site provides a clear example of early urban planning and fortification visible at ground level rather than as restored monuments.
Established in the early historic era, the settlement was walled and occupied across several centuries before declining; archaeological excavations have revealed domestic remains, streets and evidence of sustained urban occupation. Over time the site was abandoned and preserved under layers of soil until modern excavation and study.
The site lies on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar in Odisha, within the coastal plains of eastern India and within easy reach of the state capital’s urban area.
- Archaeological significance: Excavations have identified it as a planned fortified township from the early historic period, with remaining earthworks that mark the original enclosure.
