Siq
Monument Narrow sandstone gorge forming Petra's dramatic entrance
Narrow sandstone gorge that serves as the main entrance to Petra, carved by water and wind. The Siq leads directly to the Treasury and is traversed by nearly all visitors to the archaeological site.
The Siq is a narrow, natural rock gorge that forms the main entrance corridor to the archaeological site of Petra in southern Jordan. It is roughly 1.2 kilometres long and is the principal approach used for access to Petra’s most famous monuments.
The Siq leads directly to the rock-cut façade known as the Treasury (Al-Khazneh) at Petra’s main entrance and is the dramatic prelude to the archaeological city. Its winding passage is flanked by steep sandstone walls, water channels and carved niches, and visitors walk the length of the gorge along the ancient paved route.
The gorge is primarily a natural geological fault and gorge formed in sandstone, but it was used and modified by the Nabataean civilization in the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. The Nabataeans installed paved surfaces, water-management channels and rock-cut features along the Siq to control flash floods and to enhance the ceremonial approach to Petra.
The Siq sits within the Petra archaeological park in Ma’an Governorate, immediately adjacent to the modern town of Wadi Musa in southern Jordan, and forms the main eastern approach into Petra’s central area.
- Dimensions: The narrow gorge is roughly 1.2 kilometres long with rock walls rising to around 80 metres in places, producing dramatic light and shadow effects.
- Best light: Best photographed early morning or late afternoon when light angles emphasize the carved facades at the gorge mouth and the Treasury beyond.
How to Get to Siq #
From Amman drive south on the Desert Highway (Highway 15) toward Wadi Musa (Petra) - the distance is about 230-250 km and the drive typically takes around 3 hours. Regular intercity coaches/JETT buses also run Amman-Petra. The Petra Visitor Centre in Wadi Musa is the normal starting point; from there it is a roughly 20-30 minute walk to the mouth of the Siq, and then about a 1-1.2 km walk through the Siq to reach the Treasury.
Tips for Visiting Siq #
- Enter Petra through the official Visitor Centre early (before 7:00-8:00) to walk the Siq before tour buses arrive - morning light also highlights the rock colors and details along the gorge.
- Walk the Siq slowly and look for the Nabataean water channels, small rock carvings and niche tomb facades recessed in the walls; these are easy to miss when everyone focuses on the Treasury at the end.
Best Time to Visit Siq #
Best visited in spring or autumn for moderate temperatures and comfortable conditions walking the Siq and the wider Petra site; avoid the peak summer heat when possible.
