How to Get to Sinuiju
Sinuiju is a border city on the Yalu/Amnok River opposite Dandong (China) and a terminus of North Korea's Pyongui rail line. There is no regular commercial airport in Sinuiju; access is normally by rail from Pyongyang or by controlled road/train crossings from Dandong, and travel for foreign visitors is typically organized through approved tour operators.
Pyongyang Sunan International Airport (FNJ): Sinuiju has no regular commercial airport; the main international gateway for travel inside North Korea is Pyongyang Sunan Airport. From Sunan you can reach Sinuiju only by overland rail or road on the state rail network and highways (see Train section); travel between Pyongyang and Sinuiju is typically arranged as part of an organized itinerary and can take most of a day by train.
Dandong Langtou Airport (DDG): Dandong (China) is the nearest Chinese airport to Sinuiju. The Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge across the Yalu/Amnok River links Dandong and Sinuiju, but crossing and onward travel into Sinuiju are subject to border controls and must be arranged in advance; actual transfer times across the border are short (the bridge crossing itself is minutes) but formalities and onward transport typically make the journey take 30-90 minutes or more depending on arrangements.
Train: Sinuiju is the terminus of North Korea’s Pyongui Line; the main station is Sinuiju Ch’ŏngnyŏn (Sinuiju Chongnyon) station. Trains run from Pyongyang (Pyongyang Station) to Sinuiju, but timetables and services are irregular and tickets for foreign visitors are normally handled by state tourism authorities or on-arrival station offices; the rail journey is an overnight or day-long trip depending on the service.
Bus: Local city buses and regional coaches serve Sinuiju for domestic travel, while cross-border coach or road transfers from Dandong are tightly regulated and usually part of an organized border crossing. Local buses are inexpensive for residents but schedules, fares and availability for foreign travellers are managed locally and often require a guide or tour operator to arrange.
How to Get Around Sinuiju
Navigation in Sinuiju is strongly shaped by the city's border location and the country's regulations: trains and state buses provide the backbone of local movement, but most foreigners must rely on organised transfers and guides. For short distances, walking is often the simplest option; for anything beyond that, plan through an approved operator to handle permits and crossings.
- Train (Pyongui Line) - The Pyongui Line links Pyongyang and Sinuiju (Sinuiju Ch'ŏngnyŏn station) and is the most direct way inside North Korea to reach the city. Services are state-run, can be slow, and timetables change; foreign visitors usually travel on trains arranged by tour operators. Expect a long day or overnight journey rather than a fast intercity service; bring food and water and be prepared for minimal onboard amenities.
- State buses & regional coaches - Local buses cover short urban routes around Sinuiju and regional coaches link nearby towns. Schedules and fares are aimed at residents and are subject to local regulations; for foreigners, using these services often requires accompaniment by a state guide. Buses are basic but an inexpensive way to see local life if arranged through official channels.
- Taxis & private car hire - Taxis and private cars exist but are not a straightforward option for independent foreign travellers - hires are typically arranged through hotels or local authorities. For itineraries and border transfers (for example from Dandong), organised private transfers are the practical choice and will be quoted by your tour operator. Expect simple vehicles and negotiating/arranging through an intermediary rather than hailing on the street.
- Cross‑border transfer (Dandong ↔ Sinuiju) - Crossing between Dandong and Sinuiju via the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge is the shortest geographic route but highly controlled. Border formalities, visas, and vehicle access are handled at the crossing; most foreigners cross only on organised, pre-approved transfers. Allow additional time for paperwork and expect the crossing to be part of a guided itinerary rather than an independent trip.
- Guided tours / organised transport - For almost all foreign visitors, the practical way to get around Sinuiju is as part of an organised tour or with a government-approved guide. Guides arrange permits, transport, and museum/monument visits and handle local payments and logistics. This removes much of the uncertainty but means limited independent mobility and pre-set schedules.
- Walking - Sinuiju is compact enough to explore on foot in central neighbourhoods; walking is the best way to take in riverside areas and markets seen on approved visits. Always follow your guide's directions and local regulations when moving around; street photography and access to some areas may be restricted.
