Simlipal National Park is a protected area and tiger reserve in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, India, known for dense forests, wildlife and several notable waterfalls. It forms part of a larger landscape that supports tigers, elephants and other large mammals.

The park contains a mix of tropical and subtropical forest types, grasslands and riverine corridors and includes well-known falls such as Barehipani and Joranda, which are popular visitor destinations within the reserve. Wildlife surveys record populations of tigers, Asian elephants and a range of deer and primate species.

Originally established to protect regional biodiversity the area has been managed under India’s protected-area and tiger-reserve frameworks; park authorities maintain core and buffer zones and regulate tourism, research and local-community access.

Geographically Simlipal lies in northeastern Odisha within the Eastern Ghats foothills, with the nearest district centres providing access roads and park entry points.

  • Conservation status: The park is managed as part of a larger tiger reserve and biosphere landscape, so access and activities are regulated for conservation.
  • When to visit: Road and trail access can be limited in the monsoon season; plan visits in the drier months for easier travel and clearer walking routes.

What to See #

  • Major waterfalls: Barehipani Falls and Joranda Falls, two of the better-known waterfalls in the park that are popular destinations for visitors.
  • Protected core zones: Core protected areas where forest, grassland and wildlife habitats are managed for conservation as part of the larger tiger reserve system.
