Silmido

Silmido is a small, uninhabited island off the west coast of South Korea in Incheon. It is widely known for its role as a training site for a covert military unit in the late 20th century.

The island contains concrete ruins and traces of former training facilities rather than regular tourist infrastructure. It attracts interest mainly for its modern historical significance rather than natural features.

In the years following a 1968 assassination attempt on the South Korean presidency, a secret unit was formed and trained on Silmido; the unit later became involved in a mutiny. Details of the episode were restricted for decades and were publicized in the 1990s, becoming the basis for public discussion and later cultural portrayals.

Silmido lies in the Yellow Sea near the Incheon archipelago and is administratively part of Incheon metropolitan area in northwest South Korea.
