Signal de Botrange is Belgium’s highest point in the High Fens plateau; hikers and nature lovers come for peatland trails, cross‑country skiing in winter, and broad moorland views.

Main image

Signal de Botrange is the highest natural point in Belgium at 694 metres above sea level, located in the High Fens (Hautes Fagnes) nature region in eastern Belgium. It is an accessible upland plateau of bogs, heath and peatlands that contrasts with the lowlands elsewhere in the country.

The site is a popular starting point for walking and nature trails across the High Fens, and visitor infrastructure at the summit includes a marker, information panels and nearby refuges such as Baraque Michel. The plateau experiences colder, wetter weather than much of Belgium and supports specialized bog ecosystems.

The High Fens and Signal de Botrange sit near the German border in eastern Wallonia and are part of a cross-border upland area; the location is commonly reached from nearby towns by road and used for both nature tourism and scientific monitoring of upland peatland habitats.

Signal de Botrange lies within the Hautes Fagnes-Eifel natural region, forming one of Belgium’s most distinct upland landscapes.

  • Belgium's highest point: At 694 metres above sea level it is the highest point in Belgium and on many clear days offers extensive views across the High Fens plateau and into neighbouring Germany.

What to See #

  • Summit marker and viewing point: The summit marker and small visitor facilities at the highpoint provide a common starting point for walking routes across the surrounding bogs and heathland of the High Fens.
  • Baraque Michel: Baraque Michel is a nearby mountain hut and historic refuge that serves hikers and nature visitors exploring the Haute Fagnes plateau.

How to Get to Signal de Botrange #

Signal de Botrange is the highest point in Belgium, located in the High Fens (Hautes‑Fagnes) nature reserve. It is reached by road from nearby towns (for example Eupen or Malmedy); there is a small car park close to the summit and a boardwalk/footpath that leads a short distance (a few minutes’ walk) to the actual high point. In winter and in wet weather follow the marked trails and park only in designated areas.

Tips for Visiting Signal de Botrange #

  • Go early in the morning on clear days for the best long‑distance visibility from Belgium's high point; the High Fens often fills with fog later in the day, reducing views.
  • Respect and stay on the raised boardwalks and marked paths through the peatland; many visitors miss the fragile bog habitat and its interpretive panels because they wander off the trails.
  • Check seasonal road and trail conditions before you go-winter snow, spring thaw or heather fires can change access to parking areas near the Signal de Botrange.
