Sigeion

Sigeion is the site of an ancient Greek city located on the southern entrance to the Hellespont in the Troad region of what is now Çanakkale Province, Turkey. It originated as an Archaic Greek settlement and figures in classical period accounts of the northwest Anatolian coast.

The archaeological site includes remains of settlements sited close to the coastline and a commanding position over sea routes entering the Hellespont, which made it strategically important in antiquity. Surface remains and finds attest to occupation during the Archaic and Classical periods.

Historically Sigeion was established as an early Greek colonial foundation and later featured in conflicts and political arrangements among Greek city-states and regional powers during the first millennium BC. Its coastal location shaped its maritime and strategic role.

Geographically the site sits on the Troad coast near the mouth of the Dardanelles Strait; the modern city of Çanakkale and the Gallipoli peninsula lie across the strait to the north.
