Siesta Key, Florida

Siesta Key is a barrier island on the Gulf Coast of Florida off Sarasota in Sarasota County, known for its long sandy beaches and seaside village atmosphere. It is a popular regional destination for beachgoing, water recreation and short coastal visits.

The island’s principal attraction is its wide beaches with very fine white quartz sand that stays cool in sunlight; this makes the shoreline a primary draw for swimmers, sunbathers and families. The island also offers a compact commercial centre with restaurants, bars and shops, plus quieter beaches and residential areas along its length.

Siesta Key developed in the 20th century as a leisure and residential area connected to Sarasota by bridges across the Intracoastal Waterway. Over time it has grown as a seasonal and year-round community with tourism-focused amenities.

Geographically Siesta Key lies immediately offshore of Sarasota on Florida’s Gulf Coast, linked to the city by causeway bridges; the nearest major urban centre is Sarasota, which provides the airports and larger services visitors use when travelling to the island.
