Main image

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is an isolated coastal mountain massif on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, notable for being the highest coastal range in the world. Its highest points reach roughly 5,700 metres, rising sharply from the sea to snow-cap or near-snow elevations within a short horizontal distance.

The range contains extreme biodiversity zones, from mangroves and tropical forest at lower elevations to páramo and glacial-influenced environments near the summits. It is also home to pre-Columbian archaeological sites and the ancient cultural landscapes of indigenous groups who inhabit the highlands.

The mountains have long been inhabited and culturally significant to local indigenous peoples; in modern times parts of the massif are protected as national natural parks and reserves to conserve biodiversity and cultural heritage. The Sierra Nevada lies just inland from the coastal city of Santa Marta and dominates the surrounding coastal plain.

  • Extreme elevation gain: The range rises from sea level to around 5,700 metres within a short horizontal distance, creating very steep ecological gradients and high biodiversity.
  • Indigenous homelands: The mountains are ancestral territory for several indigenous groups, including the Kogi and Arhuaco, who maintain traditional communities in the highlands.

What to See #

  • Highest peaks: Pico Cristóbal Colón and Pico Simón Bolívar, the twin highest summits of the range, rising to approximately 5,700 metres above sea level and forming the highest coastal massif in the world.
  • Ciudad Perdida (Teyuna): The archaeological site of Ciudad Perdida (Teyuna) on the southern slopes, accessed by multi-day treks through forested foothills and river valleys.

Tips for Visiting Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta #

  • Plan treks and high-altitude visits in the dry season (generally December-March) to avoid heavy rains on muddy trails and river crossings.
  • Use registered local guides and tour operators when entering indigenous territories or attempting multi‑day treks (e.g., routes to Ciudad Perdida and interior villages); permits and local permissions are commonly required.
  • Allow extra time to acclimatize by spending a night at lower elevations (Santa Marta or Minca) before ascending into higher cloud‑forest zones to reduce risk of altitude‑related problems and to improve visibility for views of the massif.

Best Time to Visit Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta #

Visit in the drier months (roughly December-March) for the most reliable trekking and coastal access, keeping in mind temperatures and conditions vary widely by elevation.

Dry season (December-March)
Dec-Mar · Lowlands ~25-30°C; high peaks much cooler
Drier, clearer conditions make coastal access and lower-elevation trekking easier and views toward the high peaks more reliable.
Wet season (April-November)
Apr-Nov · Lowlands ~24-30°C; high elevations much colder
Heavier, frequent rains dominate much of the year-trails become slippery, landslide risk increases and access can be disrupted; weather varies strongly with elevation.
