Sierra Nevada de Lagunas Bravas

Sierra Nevada de Lagunas Bravas is a high Andean mountain area in western Argentina’s Catamarca Province characterized by volcanic peaks, high-altitude lakes and saline basins. The landscape comprises volcanic edifices, glacially influenced cirques and isolated lagoons that attract specialists in geology, ecology and high-mountain trekking.

The area offers glaciated summits and alpine lakes that are of interest to mountaineers and researchers studying Andean volcanism and high-altitude ecosystems. It is remote with limited infrastructure and seasonal access determined by snow and weather conditions.

Geologically the massif is part of the Andes and includes volcanic structures and recent geologic deposits; the lagunas form in volcanic depressions and glacial basins and support specialised high-altitude flora and fauna. Human presence is sparse and usually seasonal.

The range lies in northwestern Argentina near the international frontier with Chile, within Catamarca Province, and forms part of the high central Andes belt well inland from Argentina’s lowland regions.

• High-altitude access: High elevation and remote terrain mean visits are mainly for experienced mountaineers, scientists or guided expeditions; proper acclimatization and planning are required.

• Plan travel in the austral summer (roughly November-March) when high‑altitude roads and passes leading into the Puna are most likely to be open and access conditions are easier.
• Arrange travel with an experienced local operator who knows the Catamarca high‑plateau routes and can provide suitable 4x4 transport and acclimatization advice for the extreme elevations of the Laguna and volcanic landscapes.
• Give yourself time to approach across established Puna routes rather than trying ad hoc shortcuts - the area is remote, services are sparse, and scenic altiplano lagoons and volcanic vistas are best enjoyed from guided day itineraries.
