Sierra Nevada
Mountains Major California mountain range with high alpine peaks
California’s Sierra Nevada mountain range offers Yosemite and Sequoia parks, alpine lakes, the John Muir Trail and ski areas-appeals to hikers, climbers and winter-sport visitors.
The Sierra Nevada is a major mountain range in eastern California, running roughly 400 miles from the Cascade foothills in the north to the Tehachapi Mountains in the south. It hosts dramatic granite peaks, deep glacial valleys and extensive alpine ecosystems.
Key natural attractions include the high granite features of Yosemite Valley, the giant sequoias in Sequoia and Kings Canyon, and high-elevation lakes such as Lake Tahoe. The range contains Mount Whitney at 4,421 meters, the highest point in the contiguous United States.
The Sierra formed through uplift and the exposure of granitic batholiths, with extensive glacial sculpting during the Pleistocene. Human history has included Indigenous habitation, 19th-century Gold Rush mining in the foothills and later establishment of national parks and wilderness protection.
Geographically it forms the principal orographic barrier between California’s Central Valley to the west and the Great Basin to the east, with major road and trail corridors providing access from valley towns and eastern gateways.
- Extent and high point: Stretches roughly 400 miles north-south along eastern California and contains the highest point in the contiguous U.S., Mount Whitney at 4,421 meters.
- Protected areas: Includes major protected areas such as Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks and extensive designated wilderness on its high ridges.
What to See #
- Mount Whitney: The highest peak in the contiguous United States at 4,421 meters, commonly reached via the Mount Whitney Trail which requires a permit for the long-distance hike.
- Lake Tahoe: A large alpine lake straddling the California-Nevada border at high elevation, backing winter recreation and summer boating on clear mountain water.
- Yosemite National Park: A nationally protected set of valleys and cliffs, including Yosemite Valley with its granite cliffs, waterfalls and iconic domes such as El Capitan and Half Dome.
- John Muir Trail: A long-distance high-country trail of about 211 miles that runs largely along the Sierra crest and connects several major national parks and wilderness areas.
- Mammoth Mountain: A year-round ski area and volcanic-ash-shaped resort town that anchors eastern Sierra winter sports and mountain recreation.
How to Get to Sierra Nevada #
Access depends on which part of the Sierra is the destination. Yosemite National Park is approached via Highway 41 (from Fresno/Oakhurst), Highway 140 (from Merced) or Highway 120 (from Manteca/Big Oak Flat). The eastern Sierra towns (Bishop, Lone Pine) are reached via US-395, which runs parallel to the range and provides access to trailheads for the John Muir Trail and Mount Whitney.
Tips for Visiting Sierra Nevada #
- Approach eastern Sierra trails (e.g., Whitney, Mt. Langley) early in the season for snow-free passes; some trailheads open later due to snowmelt.
- If driving Highway 395, stop at small towns like Bishop for climbing advice and last-minute supplies-local shops know conditions better than many online posts.
- Consider altitude when planning: some trails quickly gain elevation and weather can change fast-check ranger station bulletins.
Best Time to Visit Sierra Nevada #
Best visited in summer for trail access; check snowpack and ranger updates for high routes.
