Sierra Maestra
Mountains Mountain range in southeastern Cuba, revolutionary stronghold
The Sierra Maestra range contains Cuba’s highest peaks, including Pico Turquino, and cloud forests that hosted revolutionary guerrilla activity; hikers come for mountain trails, waterfalls, and historical sites tied to mid-20th-century conflict.
The Sierra Maestra is a mountain range in southeastern Cuba that forms the island’s highest and most rugged massif. It contains Cuba’s tallest peak, Pico Turquino, and hosts extensive cloud forest and montane ecosystems.
The range offers multi-day trekking routes, river valleys and steep ridgelines; the highest point reaches 1,974 metres. The terrain and elevation create a diversity of habitats and impressive views over the surrounding lowlands and Caribbean Sea.
Historically the Sierra Maestra was the base for guerrilla forces during the Cuban revolution in the 1950s; settlements, trails and surviving wartime camps reflect that 20th-century history. Over time the area has remained sparsely populated and is used for conservation, limited agriculture and trekking.
Geographically the range runs along the southeast of Cuba in provinces including Santiago de Cuba and Granma, rising directly from coastal plains and forming a clear mountainous backbone in the island’s southeast.
- Hiking access: Best-known hiking routes start from small mountain settlements and require guides in some sectors due to rugged trails and remoteness.
What to See #
- Pico Turquino: The island chain's highest summit at 1,974 metres, the tallest point in Cuba and a common destination for multi-day hikes inside the range.

Tips for Visiting Sierra Maestra #
- Plan Sierra Maestra visits in the dry season (roughly November-April) when trails are less slippery and visibility is better; heavy rains make routes more difficult and some access points impassable.
- Hire a reputable local guide and allow multiple days for treks-major peaks and trails (including Pico Turquino) are remote and most visitors underestimate the terrain and logistics required for safe travel.
- If you want to avoid the busiest trails, ask guides about lesser-used approaches and stay overnight in mountain refuges or riverside camps instead of attempting a rushed day trip from the lowlands.
