Main image

The Sierra Madre Occidental is a major mountain range that runs generally north-south along western Mexico for approximately 1,200 kilometres. The range is characterized by volcanic geology, high plateaus and deep canyons, and it forms a prominent physiographic barrier between the coastal plain and the Mexican Plateau.

Prominent features within the range include the Copper Canyon (Barrancas del Cobre) system in the north, composed of multiple deep canyons carved into volcanic rock, and the highland region known as the Sierra Tarahumara, home to the Rarámuri (Tarahumara) people. The mountains support extensive pine-oak forests and a variety of endemic flora and fauna.

The Sierra Madre Occidental formed through Cenozoic volcanic activity and tectonic uplift, creating the rugged topography visible today; human occupation includes long-established indigenous settlements, traditional agriculture and modern forestry activities. Accessibility varies from well-served towns and scenic railway links to very remote canyon interiors.

Geographically the range runs roughly parallel to Mexico’s Pacific coast, stretching from the northwest near Sonora and Chihuahua through Durango, Sinaloa, Nayarit and into Jalisco and surrounding states, with major regional cities such as Chihuahua and Guadalajara lying near different parts of the system.

  • Scale and elevation: The range runs roughly north-south for about 1,200 kilometres along western Mexico and reaches alpine elevations commonly above 2,000-3,000 metres in many sectors.
  • Biodiversity and communities: Contains extensive pine-oak forests and biologically rich habitats, with deep canyons and isolated highland plateaus that support endemic species and traditional Indigenous communities.

How to Get to Sierra Madre Occidental #

The Sierra Madre Occidental is accessible from multiple regional hubs. For the northern canyons, take the Chihuahua-Pacific Railway (El Chepe) from Chihuahua to Los Mochis or Divisadero. For the southern ranges, cities such as Durango, Mazatlán, and Tepic are common entry points; from these cities, regional highways and local roads provide access to mountain towns. Expect long drives on winding roads; public transport exists but is slower.

Tips for Visiting Sierra Madre Occidental #

  • If visiting the Copper Canyon region as part of the Sierra Madre Occidental, plan for long drives and high elevations-carry layers and allow extra time for mountain roads.
  • Explore by train where possible: the Chihuahua-Pacific Railway (El Chepe) threads the western flank and offers unforgettable views.
  • Avoid July-September if heavy summer rains make dirt roads impassable; winter nights can be very cold at altitude.
