The Sierra Madre de Chiapas is a mountainous range in southern Mexico that extends along much of the southern Chiapas region and continues into neighbouring Central America. It is an important physiographic and ecological unit in the Mesoamerican highlands.

The range contains volcanic peaks and steep ridges with elevations that rise to over 4,000 metres at the highest summits, supporting cloud forests, montane pine-oak forests and diverse flora and fauna. These habitats support numerous protected areas and endemic species.

Geologically the range is part of the Central American volcanic and mountainous system and includes active and extinct volcanoes. Human use historically has included agriculture on accessible slopes, highland communities and forestry, while modern conservation efforts protect remaining cloud forest tracts.

Geographically it runs across southern Chiapas toward the Guatemala border, forming a major topographic barrier between coastal lowlands and interior highlands.

  • Biodiversity: The range contains extensive cloud forest habitats and high biodiversity, including many endemic species and important conservation areas.
  • Elevation extremes: High-altitude peaks exceed 4,000 metres in places, producing steep climatic and ecological gradients over short distances.

What to See #

  • El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve: El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve is one of the best-known protected areas in the range, protecting cloud forest ecosystems and a high level of biodiversity.
  • Volcán Tacaná: Volcán Tacaná is a prominent volcanic peak on the Mexico-Guatemala border and is one of the highest summits in the regional range, rising to elevations above 4,000 metres.
