Sierra de las Nieves National Park
Mountain Protected park in Andalusia, home to pinsapo firs
Sierra de las Nieves National Park protects karst ridges and stands of Spanish fir (pinsapo); hikers and naturalists visit for marked trails, caves and panoramic views between Ronda and the Costa del Sol.
Sierra de las Nieves National Park is a protected mountain area in the province of Málaga, Andalusia, southern Spain, covering parts of the Sierra de las Nieves range. It was designated a national park in 2021 and is recognized for its ecological importance and unique forest communities.
The park’s highlights include relict forests of Spanish fir (Abies pinsapo), deep karst landscapes with caves and sinkholes, and panoramic mountain summits such as the peak Torrecilla. Trails and short routes allow access to viewpoints and endangered-forest areas, attracting hikers and naturalists.
The area’s protection has evolved from local natural park status to national park designation to strengthen conservation of its habitats and endemic species. Management focuses on preserving native forests, karst features and traditional rural landscapes while regulating visitor access.
Geographically the park lies inland from the Costa del Sol in Málaga province; the nearest major city is Málaga, roughly 50-70 kilometres to the east depending on the park entrance, and the landscape transitions from coastal plains to rugged mountain terrain.
- National park status: Declared a national park in 2021, upgrading its previous protected status as a natural park and nature reserve.
- Spanish firs: Noted for relict Spanish fir (Abies pinsapo) forests that are rare and of high conservation value in southern Spain.
