Main image

The Sierra de la Laguna is a compact mountain range at the southern end of the Baja California Peninsula in Baja California Sur, Mexico, with peaks reaching roughly 2,000 metres. The range is ecologically distinct from the surrounding desert and coastal lowlands and contains cloud forest and pine-oak communities at higher elevations.

Hikers and naturalists use trails that cross ridgelines and descend to spring-fed valleys; the mountains are valued for endemic plants, birdlife and cooler temperatures rather than alpine mountaineering. Many routes are single-day or multi-day trekking tracks rather than technical climbs.

The range formed through tectonic uplift of the peninsula and hosts soils and habitats isolated from mainland Mexico, which has produced a number of endemic species. It is managed in part for conservation as a biosphere reserve.

Geographically it occupies the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula in Baja California Sur, inland from the Pacific and Sea of Cortez coasts. The massif is the dominant highland at the peninsula’s southern end and provides springs that feed local communities.

  • Elevation: Elevation reaches about 2,000 metres, creating distinct montane vegetation and cooler climates compared with the Baja peninsula coast.
  • Conservation status: Protected under a biosphere reserve status for its endemic flora and cloud forest remnants, making it a conservation priority in Baja California Sur.

What to See #

  • Principal peaks: The highest summit of the range rises to roughly 2,000-2,100 metres and supports pockets of pine and oak cloud forest not found on the adjacent lowland desert and coastal plain.
  • Biosphere reserve: Designated as a biosphere reserve, the mountain slopes protect endemic plants and seasonal cloud forest; upland springs form important watersheds for surrounding coastal areas.
