Sidi Saiyyed Mosque

The Sidi Saiyyed Mosque is a small 16th-century mosque in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, renowned for its intricately carved stone latticework. Its series of ornamental ‘jali’ windows have become an iconic example of Indo-Islamic craftsmanship.

The mosque’s main highlight is a set of ten carved sandstone lattice panels featuring floral and geometric designs; one panel commonly called the ‘Tree of Life’ is especially celebrated and widely reproduced. The delicate openwork windows are viewed both at close range and from the mosque’s courtyard.

Built around 1572-1573 by Sidi Saiyyed, the mosque served the local Muslim community and was constructed during the period of the late Gujarat Sultanate and early Mughal influence in the region.
