Key natural highlights include high peaks such as Monte Vettore at 2,476 metres and the high plains around Castelluccio di Norcia with the Piani di Castelluccio, noted for a dramatic spring and summer flower bloom. The landscape is interspersed with karst caves, steep gorges and forested valleys.

The area has a long history of pastoral use and local mountain communities; it is protected in parts by the Monti Sibillini National Park, which manages trails, conservation and visitor facilities. The mountains are popular for hiking, trekking, mountain biking and winter sports on suitable slopes.

Geographically the range lies in central Italy between the regions of Marche and Umbria, forming part of the Apennine backbone and rising above nearby lowland towns and valleys.
