Monti Sibillini National Park is a protected area in central Italy covering a section of the Apennine Mountains in the Marche region. The park includes high peaks, plateaus and rural mountain communities and is a key protected area for central Apennine landscapes.

Hikers frequent marked trails and long-distance routes that cross ridges and high valleys, with peaks rising above 2,000 metres and alpine plateaus such as Castelluccio. The park offers a mix of mountain walking, shepherding landscapes and seasonal wildflower displays across open plains and meadows.

The park was established to conserve the Monti Sibillini massif and its biodiversity, traditional agricultural uses and mountain settlements. Local villages and pastoral practices have shaped the open high plateaus and fields that are now part of the protected landscape.

The park lies in the central Apennines of Italy within the Marche region, bordering parts of Umbria and Abruzzo, and is accessed from nearby mountain towns such as Norcia and Visso.

• Flowering plain: The plateau around Castelluccio is known for dramatic spring and early summer flowering of cultivated and wild plants, attracting photographers and walkers.

What to See#

• Monte Vettore (2,476 m): Monte Vettore, the park’s highest peak at 2,476 metres, forming the central massif and a focal point for high-mountain routes and ridge walks.
• Castelluccio di Norcia plateau: The Castelluccio plateau near Norcia, a high plain famous for seasonal flower displays and sweeping agricultural landscapes at high altitude.

Regional access via the A14 and SS77 roads; nearest larger towns include Ascoli Piceno and Norcia. Local buses serve park entrances in summer; driving to trailheads is usual for more remote hikes.

• For the best light on the Sibillini plains, aim for early morning or late afternoon hikes.
• Some refuges close in winter; check refuge availability and avalanche forecasts before winter ventures.
• Try the loop to Pizzo della Sibilla for its literary associations and extensive views.
