Historical Site Ancient Khmer archaeological park with Khmer and Dvaravati ruins
An archaeological complex in central Thailand, Si Thep preserves city walls, temple foundations and stone inscriptions from early Southeast Asian kingdoms; visitors explore ruins, an on-site museum and surrounding agricultural landscapes.
Si Thep Historical Park is an archaeological complex in central Thailand containing the remains of an ancient fortified city and associated temple sites. The site preserves earthworks, brick structures and buried deposits that document regional urban development over many centuries.
Significant features include an inner walled city with moats and embankments, Khmer-style brick prang towers on hilltops and later Buddhist monuments, reflecting cultural changes across the 7th to 14th centuries. Accessible paths and interpretive signage allow visitors to walk key parts of the complex and view masonry foundations and carved fragments.
Excavations and surveys over the 20th and 21st centuries have revealed structural foundations, inscriptions and ceramics that tie the site to Dvaravati and later Khmer administrative and religious networks. Archaeological work has guided the park’s presentation and conservation strategy.
The park sits in Phetchabun province in central Thailand, on a raised plateau with agricultural land around it; it is reached by regional roads from nearby towns and serves as a protected archaeological landscape within the province.
- Dating: The site preserves continuous occupation layers from roughly the 7th to the 14th centuries, showing Dvaravati and later Khmer influence.
What to See #
- Inner city (walled area): Central walled area defined by earthen ramparts and moats, containing temple foundations and habitation remains from the site's main occupation period.
- Khao Klang Nok / Prang area: A hillsite with the best-preserved brick Prang tower remains dating to Khmer-influenced phases; it occupies a prominent position in the complex.
- Archaeological learning centre: A museum and visitor facility that provides context on archaeological finds and on-site conservation, with displays of ceramics, inscriptions and site maps.

- The archaeological area is spread out-renting a bicycle or arranging motorbike transport from the visitor centre saves time and lets you reach satellite mounds that many visitors skip.
- Ask staff or a local guide to point out the smaller temple mounds and inscriptions outside the main enclosure; those lesser-visited features reveal different construction phases and are easy to miss on a quick circuit.
