Shuswap Lake is a large inland lake in south-central British Columbia that gives its name to the surrounding recreational region. It is known for an intricate shoreline with multiple long arms and many islands, used extensively for boating and lakeside recreation.

The lake’s four principal arms and numerous inlets host towns, marinas and parks and form the core of a regional houseboating and fishing industry. Popular activities include boating, fishing, swimming and shoreline camping during warmer months.

Historically the lake and its shores have been home to Secwepemc (Shuswap) peoples; in modern times it supports a mix of permanent communities and seasonal tourism infrastructure. Water-based access is central to most recreational uses, with several established boat launch points and marinas.

Geographically the lake lies in the Interior Plateau of British Columbia; towns and communities such as Salmon Arm, Sicamous and Chase sit on or near its shores, with forested ridges and river valleys surrounding the water.

  • Houseboating: Popular for houseboating; the lake's complex shoreline and sheltered arms make it suitable for multi-day boat trips and anchored overnight stays.
  • Shoreline complexity: Four principal arms create a fragmented shoreline with many inlets and marinas, so local tide and wind conditions can vary significantly between arms.

What to See #

  • Salmon Arm: Salmon Arm - the lake's longest arm, home to the city of Salmon Arm with marina facilities and lakeside parks.
  • Other arms and launch points: Seymour, Anstey and the main Shuswap and Sicamous arms - each arm contains distinct shoreline communities, marinas and launching points that support houseboating and recreational boating.

How to Get to Shuswap Lake #

Shuswap Lake spans a broad region; common entry points are Sicamous (east arm) and Salmon Arm (south arm) in British Columbia. From Kamloops, drive east on Highway 1 and then north on Highway 97 toward Sicamous (about 1-1.5 hours). From Vancouver, expect a 4-5 hour drive via the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1). Ferries and private boats serve some islands; marinas in Sicamous and Salmon Arm have launch facilities.

Tips for Visiting Shuswap Lake #

  • If launching a boat from Sorrento or Sicamous, check local tide and wind forecasts-Shuswap's arms can channel wind into surprising gusts.
  • Visit in late June for water that's at its warmest and the wildflowers near the lake shores in full bloom.
  • Don't miss the provincial park beaches around Mara and Salmon Arm for low-key picnics away from resort marinas.
