Main image

Shuruppak is an ancient Sumerian city located on the Euphrates in southern Mesopotamia, known from archaeological remains at a major tell. It was an urban center in antiquity and appears in literary and administrative sources from the region.

Archaeological excavations at the tell have revealed multilayer occupation from the Ubaid period through Early Dynastic phases, producing pottery, building foundations and cuneiform tablets. Some of the recovered texts include wisdom literature traditionally associated with the city, linking it to Sumerian cultural history.

In historical sources Shuruppak is associated with early urban development in southern Mesopotamia and with narratives preserved in later Mesopotamian literature. The site today is an archaeological locality rather than a standing modern settlement.

Geographically it lies on the Euphrates in what is now southern Iraq, where the tell dominates the local floodplain landscape.

  • Long occupation: Occupied from the Ubaid period into the Early Dynastic phases of Mesopotamian history, with material evidence dating to the 4th and 3rd millennia BCE.
  • Written records: Cuneiform tablets from the site include wisdom literature and administrative texts that link the city to broader Sumerian cultural traditions.

What to See #

  • Main tell (archaeological mound): The principal archaeological mound where successive occupational layers have been recorded, yielding pottery, architectural remains and administrative tablets.
  • Temple and administrative zone: Areas interpreted as temple and administrative precincts based on foundations and cuneiform finds, reflecting the city's civic functions in antiquity.
