Shumen Fortress
Fort Medieval fortress ruins overlooking Shumen and surrounding plains
Above Bulgaria’s town of Shumen, Shumen Fortress preserves medieval walls, towers and a restored citadel area. Visitors walk ramparts for views, archaeological displays and regional history.
Shumen Fortress is a hilltop fortress and archaeological complex on the Shumen Plateau in northeastern Bulgaria, with remains spanning multiple historical periods. It is an important regional archaeological and tourist site near the city of Shumen.
The site includes an inner citadel with defensive walls and towers, outer fortifications and excavated habitation areas that visitors can walk among. Visible masonry and reconstructed sections illustrate medieval and later fortification techniques; informational panels and a small visitor area explain the finds.
Archaeological evidence shows the hill has been occupied since antiquity and was fortified and reused in medieval Bulgarian and later periods, with successive modifications to walls and internal structures. Excavations over the 20th and 21st centuries have documented the sequence of occupation and restoration.
The fortress stands on a plateau a few kilometres from the city of Shumen in northeastern Bulgaria, set above the surrounding lowlands and visible from the nearby 1300th Anniversary Monument complex.
- Access note: Best approached from the city of Shumen; the adjacent 1300th Anniversary Monument is a common combined visit.
What to See #
- Fortress core: Main citadel and outer walls date to medieval and post-medieval periods and include multiple defensive towers and a central keep area.
- Reserve and displays: Archaeological reserve and visitor area feature excavation zones, walkways and displays that interpret continuous occupation from antiquity to the Ottoman period.
How to Get to Shumen Fortress #
Shumen Fortress sits about 3.5 km north of central Shumen. From Shumen city centre, take bus lines that head toward the Shumen Plateau or a 10-15 minute taxi ride up the hill (ask for “Shumenska Krepost”). Drivers can reach the site via the Shumen-Veliki Preslav road; there is a small parking area at the archaeological park entrance. From Varna (about 100 km), regional buses run to Shumen and local transport connects to the fortress.
