Shortugai
Archaeological Site Ancient Indus-period trading outpost, archaeological site in Afghanistan
A Bronze Age Harappan trading outpost on the Oxus, Shortugai yields mud-brick ruins and artefacts; archaeologists visit for evidence of early long-distance trade between South and Central Asia.
Shortugai is an archaeological settlement in northern Afghanistan near the lower Amu Darya that is associated with the Indus (Harappan) cultural sphere. It is interpreted as a trading and production outpost established during the Bronze Age to connect Indus communities with Central Asian resources.
Excavations have revealed a fortified settlement layout with mud-brick architecture, workshop areas and evidence for craft production and storage. Radiocarbon and archaeological evidence place the site in the 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE, contemporaneous with the Mature Harappan period.
The site sits near the modern border zone of northeastern Afghanistan and the Amu Darya floodplain, positioned to exploit riverine transport and to serve as a link between highland resources and coastal Indus cities.
- Northern Harappan outpost: Represents the northernmost known outpost associated with the Indus (Harappan) cultural sphere and is linked to long-distance trade networks reaching into Central Asia.
