Shōmyō Falls (Shōmyō-daki) is a high-tiered waterfall in Toyama Prefecture, Japan, with a total drop of about 350 metres. It is the tallest waterfall in Japan by total height and is set in a steep mountain valley.

The cascade is divided into multiple tiers and is often paired with the nearby seasonal Hannoki Falls, which appears during spring snowmelt and can form a dramatic twin cascade when both runs are active. Short walking paths and viewing platforms provide direct sightlines to the base and mid-sections of the falls.

The falls are a natural feature rather than a constructed site and are most impressive from late spring to early summer when snowmelt increases flow. In winter the falls are reduced and heavy icing can form on exposed rock faces.

Shōmyō Falls lies in a mountainous area of Toyama Prefecture, accessible from local roads and short walks from nearby parking and visitor points in the Tateyama region.

  • Height: The main drop of Shōmyō Falls measures about 350 metres, making it the tallest waterfall in Japan by total height.
  • Seasonal flow: Flow is strongest in late spring and early summer during snowmelt; winter sees reduced flow and heavy icing in cold spells.

What to See #

  • Viewing platforms: Lower viewing platforms and short paths give direct sightlines to the base of the falls and photographic viewpoints within a few hundred metres of the drop.
  • Hannoki Falls (seasonal): The seasonal Hannoki Falls runs adjacent to Shōmyō Falls in spring during snowmelt and can join the main cascade when both are in flow.

Tips for Visiting Shōmyō Falls #

  • The waterfall's flow is strongest in late spring (May-June) when snowmelt peaks - plan for that if looking for drama.
  • Public buses run from Tateyama Station to a small parking area; from there it's a short, well-signed walk of 15-30 minutes.
  • Bring a light rain jacket and good camera lens: mist and spray can fog lenses even on sunny days.
