Shōfuku-ji Precinct

Shōfuku-ji Precinct is a Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple complex in the Hakata area of Fukuoka city on Kyushu, Japan, and is historically recognised as the first Zen temple established in the country (founded 1195).

The precinct contains traditional temple buildings arranged in a compact compound, including the main hall and the temple gate; visits typically focus on the architecture and Zen liturgy. The site is used for religious services and retains features typical of early Zen establishments in Japan.

Founded in 1195 by the monk Eisai, the temple introduced Rinzai Zen practices to Japan. It has been rebuilt and repaired at various times since its foundation but is primarily known for its direct link to the early spread of Zen.

Located in the Hakata district of Fukuoka city on the northern coast of Kyushu, the precinct sits within the urban fabric of Fukuoka and is accessible from the city centre by local transport.
