Shōdoshima is an island in the Seto Inland Sea administered by Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, known for its olive cultivation and scenic coastline. The island is one of the larger inhabited islands in the Inland Sea and has a mix of coastal scenery and inland gorges.

Major attractions include the olive-themed park and museum, the scenic Kankakei Gorge with marked trails and viewpoints, and the tidal sandbar known as Angel Road. Visitors often combine short hikes, coastal drives and local food experiences.

Olive cultivation was introduced successfully in the early 20th century and the island remains associated with olives and related tourism. Over the 20th century infrastructure developed to support tourism, including ferry links and local visitor facilities.

Geographically the island sits in the central Seto Inland Sea off Kagawa Prefecture and is served by ferries from Takamatsu and nearby ports. The landscape ranges from rocky coastline to wooded ravines and small farming villages.

  • Ferry access: Connected to the mainland by frequent ferries from Takamatsu and other ports, making it a common day-trip destination in the Seto Inland Sea.

What to See #

  • Kankakei Gorge: A steep, tree-lined ravine on the island noted for its dramatic cliffs and scenic walking trails, accessible by a ropeway and hiking paths.
  • Olive Park: A public park established to celebrate the island's olive cultivation, with an olive grove, museum displays and views over the Seto Inland Sea.
  • Angel Road: A tidal sandbar and pedestrian route that appears at low tide connecting small islands and offering a popular short walk and photo point.

How to Get to Shōdoshima #

From Takamatsu (Kagawa) take a ferry to Shōdoshima-regular car and passenger ferries sail from Takamatsu Port to Tonosho (and other small ports on the island). Ferries from Takamatsu take roughly 60-90 minutes; JR Takamatsu Station is a short taxi or bus ride (about 5-10 minutes) to Takamatsu Port. Once on the island, local buses, rental cars and bicycles are available; many attractions are a short drive from Tonosho Port.

Tips for Visiting Shōdoshima #

  • Arrive early in the morning (first ferries from Takamatsu) to get ahead of day-trip crowds and have quieter access to Kankakei Gorge viewpoints and the Olive Park.
  • Use Tonosho ferry port as your primary arrival point if you want closer access to shops, restaurants and many of the island's main attractions; check ferry timetables in advance as some lines are seasonal.
  • Ride the Kankakei Ropeway for the easiest panoramic view of the gorge and then follow the ridge trails - many visitors only see the ropeway viewpoint and miss the quieter inland olive groves and small soy-sauce producers off the main route.
