Shivta is a ruined Byzantine-era settlement in the Negev Desert of southern Israel, notable for its well-preserved remains of a planned agricultural village. It forms part of the group of desert cities recognised for their role in regional trade and farming.

Excavated ruins include stone houses, storerooms, public buildings and several churches, giving a clear picture of a rural Byzantine community. The site shows field systems and water-management features used to support olive and grain cultivation in an arid environment.

Shivta developed during the late Roman and Byzantine periods, flourishing between the 4th and 7th centuries CE before decline in the early medieval era. Archaeological investigation in the 20th century documented the settlement plan and its churches, and conservation work has stabilised many structures.

The site sits in the central Negev Desert, administered within Israel’s Southern District. It is reached by minor desert roads and lies among other ancient desert settlements included in the same heritage designation.

  • UNESCO status: Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the "Incense Route - Desert Cities in the Negev", recognising its well-preserved Byzantine settlement remains.

What to See #

Tips for Visiting Shivta #

  • Visit Shivta in the cooler morning or late afternoon to see the ruins in the best light and to avoid the Negev's hottest hours; combine with nearby Avdat and Halutza to see several Desert Cities in one outing.
  • Use the formal visitor parking and marked paths from the main access road (Route 40) so you enter at the staffed area and get orientation panels and maps - the site's layout is easier to follow from the main entrance.
  • Take time to study the well‑preserved Byzantine churches and reconstructed agricultural installations; many visitors stroll the outer walls and miss the interior mosaic fragments and water‑management features.
  • Check opening hours and the Israel Nature and Parks Authority information before you go-some sections can be closed for archaeological work or special events.

Best Time to Visit Shivta #

Best visited in the cooler months (autumn through spring), with spring offering particularly pleasant conditions and lower temperatures compared with hot summer days.

Cooler months (best overall)
October-April · 5-20°C (Negev averages)
Milder daytime temperatures make walking among the exposed ruins comfortable; these months avoid the extreme summer desert heat.
Spring (wildflowers & pleasant weather)
February-April · 10-25°C
Often pleasant and, in wetter years, surrounding hills may show spring vegetation-still relatively quiet compared with Israel's major tourist sites.
High summer heat
May-September · 25-40°C
Very hot and dry conditions make daytime exploration uncomfortable; ruins are exposed with little shade, so avoid midday heat if visiting in summer.
