Mount Shirouma (Shirouma-dake) is a high peak in the Northern Japanese Alps located in Nagano Prefecture. It is one of the region’s prominent alpine summits and is known for persistent snowfields and alpine flora.

The main draw is the summit ridge and the extensive snowfields that can remain into summer; the mountain reaches an elevation of about 2,932 metres. Hikers follow well-established routes from the Hakuba area and use a network of mountain huts to turn the approach into multi-day treks.

The mountain has been a focus for Japanese alpinism and mountain tourism since the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with trails and huts developed to support ascents. Modern trail infrastructure has made it a regular objective for summer hikers and late-spring snow routes.

Geographically it sits in the Hida Mountains (Northern Alps) of central Honshu, near the village of Hakuba in Nagano Prefecture. The summit is accessed from valley trailheads on the mountain’s Nagano-side approaches.

  • Approaches and timing: Most climbing routes approach from the Hakuba side, with round-trip ascents commonly taking one long day from popular trailheads or 2 days if staying at mountain huts.
  • Snow and gear: Snowfields commonly persist into early summer on high slopes, so crampons and ice axe are often necessary outside the core summer months.
