Shio-Mgvime monastery is a medieval Georgian monastic complex in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region of Georgia, founded in the 6th century by the ascetic St. Shio. It is notable for its combination of rock-cut hermitages and later masonry churches.
The site comprises cliffside caves used as cells and chapels together with stone monastic buildings clustered around a small courtyard. Visitors typically examine the caves and the adjoining church structures and can trace narrow rock passages and carved niches.
The monastery was established by St. Shio, one of the early Christian ascetics in Georgia, and developed as a monastic centre in the medieval period. Over time stone churches and support buildings were added around the original cave hermitage.
