Shinmoedake is an active stratovolcano in the Kirishima volcanic group on Kyushu, Japan, located within Miyazaki Prefecture. The peak rises to about 1,421 metres and is one of the more active cones in the Kirishima cluster.

The mountain is notable for its summit crater and frequent small-to-moderate explosive eruptions that produce ash plumes and pyroclastic deposits. Hikers use established trails when conditions allow; summit views include nearby volcanic peaks and broad highland plateaus. Access is commonly via the Ebino highland area, but routes and parking are closed when authorities raise alert levels.

Shinmoedake is a product of repeated stratovolcanic eruptions; it has a documented history of increased activity in the 21st century, including significant explosive events in 2011 and renewed activity in subsequent years. Japanese volcanological agencies monitor the cone closely and maintain an eruptive history record.

The volcano sits in the central Kirishima volcanic range on Kyushu island, within a landscape of calderas, lava domes and highland plateaus. It lies in Miyazaki Prefecture within the broader Kirishima volcanic area; the nearest local access point is the Ebino highland region.

  • Access and safety: Trailheads and visitor facilities are typically approached from the Ebino highland area; many routes are closed when the Japan Meteorological Agency issues activity warnings.
  • Elevation and activity: Summit elevation is about 1,421 metres, and the summit crater produces ash plumes during eruptions, so check local advisories before planning a hike.

Tips for Visiting Shinmoedake #

  • Start your approach from the Ebino Plateau (Ebino Kogen) trailheads in the Kirishima area - they are the usual access points for Shinmoedake views and give shorter, established routes to crater viewpoints.
  • Check Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) volcanic advisories and local trail closures before setting out - Shinmoedake has active episodes and access restrictions are commonly imposed for safety.
  • If trails are open, go early in the day to avoid afternoon cloud and reduce encounters with day‑trippers from nearby onsen towns; local mountain‑trail maps and signage at Ebino will point to the safest viewpoints that many casual visitors miss.

Best Time to Visit Shinmoedake #

Aim for spring or autumn for comfortable hiking conditions, and always check current volcanic activity notices before planning a visit.

Spring and autumn (best for visiting)
March-May, September-November · ~10-20°C (varies with elevation)
Milder temperatures and clearer trails make hiking and enjoying views more comfortable; check local advisories for volcanic activity.
Summer (warm but humid)
June-August · ~20-30°C in lowlands, cooler at altitude
Hotter, more humid conditions in surrounding lowlands; popular for outdoor activity but can be uncomfortable on hot days.
Winter (possible snow at higher elevations)
December-February · can drop near or below 0°C at higher elevations
Colder conditions and occasional snow can affect access; also check for any eruption-related restrictions.
