Shimoji-shima
Island Coral island in Okinawa with airbase history
An island in the Miyako group of Okinawa with Shimojishima Airport and surrounding coral reef. Visitors come for diving, beaches and boat links to neighboring islands.
Shimoji-shima is an island in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, forming part of the Miyako Islands in the Ryukyu archipelago. It is a small inhabited island with transport links and local infrastructure.
The island contains an airfield that provides civil aviation facilities and is notable within the island group for that infrastructure. Shores are lined with beaches and shallow coastal areas typical of the subtropical Miyako islands.
Historically the island’s airfield and facilities have supported local transport and occasional training operations, and the island has been used for limited tourism and aviation activities. The island functions as part of the broader Miyako community rather than as an independent tourist center.
Shimoji-shima lies southwest of the Japanese main island of Okinawa and is close to the larger island of Miyakojima within Okinawa Prefecture. It is reachable by air and by sea from other islands in the chain.
- Island group: Part of the Miyako Islands group and administered within Okinawa Prefecture in southern Japan.
What to See #
- Airport: Sits on the island and provides civil aviation facilities and a paved runway used for occasional commercial, training and diversionary flights.
How to Get to Shimoji-shima #
Shimoji-shima is served by Shimojishima Airport (SHI), which has scheduled domestic flights from Okinawa (Naha) and other regional airports - check current timetables for direct services. From neighboring Miyako-jima you can also reach Shimoji-shima by local boat/ferry services and then use taxis or a rental car to get around the small island; distances on the island are short so most sites are a short taxi ride or a few minutes’ drive from the ferry terminal or airport.
Tips for Visiting Shimoji-shima #
- Arrange a rental car or local transport in advance: Shimoji-shima has limited public transit and short distances between beaches, dive operators and viewpoints are easiest covered by car.
- Book any diving/snorkeling or charter trips beforehand-local operators are small and slots fill quickly, especially in peak season, and early-morning departures give the clearest water.
- Visit on weekdays or first thing in the morning to avoid weekend crowds at the island's popular shore spots; exploring lesser-known coves on the south and west coasts yields quieter snorkeling and beach access.
Best Time to Visit Shimoji-shima #
Go in spring or autumn for warm, pleasant conditions with lower typhoon risk and comfortable beach weather.
