Shimogamo Shrine (下鴨神社) is a Shinto shrine in northern Kyoto that dates back to ancient times and is one of the city’s oldest religious sites. It is recognized as part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto UNESCO World Heritage listing.
The shrine’s precincts include traditional timber halls for worship, several subsidiary shrines and the surrounding sacred forest known as Tadasu no Mori, a preserved patch of old-growth woodland. The site is an active place of worship and ceremony.
Shimogamo serves as one of Kyoto’s principal ritual centers and is closely associated with the Aoi Matsuri, a major May festival that processes between the shrine and the nearby Kamigamo Shrine. The shrine has been maintained and rebuilt at various times over centuries while preserving its ritual functions.
Located at the confluence of the Kamo and Takano rivers in northern Kyoto, the shrine sits within the city’s urban fabric but retains a tranquil forested precinct a short distance from central Kyoto landmarks.

How to Get to Shimogamo Shrine #
From Kyoto Station take the Karasuma Subway Line to Kitaōji and transfer to a city bus bound for Shimogamo Jinja (about 20-25 minutes). Alternatively, take the Karasuma Line to Kitaoji and bus 4, 17, or 205. It’s a 15-20 minute ride from central Kyoto.

- Visit during the Aoi Matsuri (May 15) or other festival days to see the shrine in active ceremonial use.
- Walk the Tadasu no Mori (the 'Forest that Corrects the Heart') behind the shrine - it's the shaded, ancient grove integral to the shrine's atmosphere.
