Shimogamo Shrine (下鴨神社) is a Shinto shrine in northern Kyoto that dates back to ancient times and is one of the city’s oldest religious sites. It is recognized as part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto UNESCO World Heritage listing.

The shrine’s precincts include traditional timber halls for worship, several subsidiary shrines and the surrounding sacred forest known as Tadasu no Mori, a preserved patch of old-growth woodland. The site is an active place of worship and ceremony.

Shimogamo serves as one of Kyoto’s principal ritual centers and is closely associated with the Aoi Matsuri, a major May festival that processes between the shrine and the nearby Kamigamo Shrine. The shrine has been maintained and rebuilt at various times over centuries while preserving its ritual functions.

Located at the confluence of the Kamo and Takano rivers in northern Kyoto, the shrine sits within the city’s urban fabric but retains a tranquil forested precinct a short distance from central Kyoto landmarks.

  • Best time to visit: Visit early in the morning for quieter precincts and clearer views of the shrine's traditional timber architecture and the surrounding forest.
  • World Heritage status: Included in the UNESCO listing for the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, which covers multiple shrines and temples in the city.
