Shikotsu-Tōya National Park
National Park Hokkaido park of volcanic calderas, lakes, and hot springs
Park centred on caldera lakes Lake Shikotsu and Lake Tōya, volcanic landscapes, hot springs and hiking routes; visitors come for onsen, crater views and lake recreation.
Shikotsu-Tōya National Park is a protected area in southwestern Hokkaido that encompasses two prominent caldera lakes and several active volcanoes. The park is known for its volcanic landscapes, clear crater lakes and geothermal activity.
Major visitor attractions include Lake Shikotsu, noted for clear water and mountain-ringed shores, and Lake Tōya, a near-circular caldera lake containing wooded islands and a lakeside resort area with hot springs. The park also features volcanic peaks such as Mount Usu and Mount Tarumae with hiking trails and ropeways.
Volcanic activity has repeatedly reshaped the area in recent centuries; eruptions of Mount Usu in the late 20th and early 21st centuries altered access routes and viewpoints and contributed to the park’s ongoing geological interest. Thermal activity supports hot spring resorts and geological interpretation sites.
The park lies in southwestern Hokkaido, with access from regional centres such as Sapporo by road and rail. Lakeside towns around Lake Tōya and Lake Shikotsu act as visitor bases for hiking, boating and onsen stays.

- Take the Mt. Usu ropeway to the summit viewing platforms for a quick, low‑effort panorama of Toya Caldera and the lakes-many visitors stick to the shoreline and miss this vantage point.
- If you want to hike, pick trails on clear-weather days and check local park information for volcanic activity notices; some crater viewpoints are closed intermittently for safety.
