Shikotan
Island Disputed Kuril island with rugged coastline and fisheries
Shikotan is one of the southern Kurils administered by Russia, with rocky shores, fishing communities and limited access; travelers seek remote coastal walks, sea fishing and observation of North Pacific marine life.
Shikotan is one of the southern Kuril Islands in the northwest Pacific, administered as part of Russia’s Sakhalin Oblast and lying among the Lesser Kurils near Hokkaido. The island is volcanic in origin and forms part of the island chain separating the Sea of Okhotsk from the Pacific.
It has been subject to long-running territorial dispute between Russia and Japan; administration has been Russian since the end of World War II. The island is sparsely populated and has limited infrastructure, with economic activity traditionally focused on fishing and small-scale local industries.
Shikotan sits in the southern Kurils, close to the northeastern coast of Hokkaido (Japan) and to other islands in the Lesser Kurils group. It is remote and reached mainly by irregular sea links and local transport from larger regional hubs.
