Shiant Islands

Islands Uninhabited Scottish islands with rich seabird colonies

Off the Outer Hebrides, the Shiant Islands host large seabird colonies-puffins, guillemots-and basalt cliffs with columnar formations. Small-boat excursions bring birdwatchers and photographers; landing is limited and guided landings focus on wildlife and geology.

The Shiant Islands are an uninhabited archipelago in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, located in The Minch east of the Isle of Lewis. The group is best known for dense seabird colonies and prominent sea cliffs.

The three principal islands are Garbh Eilean, Eilean Mhuire, and Na h-Eileanan Tarsuinn, with basaltic geology that forms sea cliffs, stacks, and rocky shores. Boat trips and coastal vantage points on nearby islands are the usual ways to view seabird colonies and dramatic coastal landforms.

Human occupation has been intermittent and the islands are generally managed for conservation and grazing; they have limited infrastructure and no permanent residents. Conservation efforts focus on protecting seabird populations and the islands’ natural habitats.

Geographically the Shiants lie in the Minch, roughly midway between the Outer Hebridean mainland and the Scottish mainland, and are accessed only by private boat or organised wildlife cruises from Lewis and other islands.

  • Wildlife highlights: The islands support large seabird colonies including razorbills, guillemots, and puffins, and are an important wildlife site in the Outer Hebrides for birdwatching from boats or nearby viewpoints.

What to See #

  • Garbh Eilean: Garbh Eilean, the largest of the group, with the highest ground and some of the principal seabird nesting colonies.
  • Eilean Mhuire: Eilean Mhuire, the second island which hosts important nesting sites and the ruins of a small historical chapel site noted in local tradition.
  • Na h-Eileanan Tarsuinn: Na h-Eileanan Tarsuinn, a series of smaller skerries and rocky islets to the west that provide additional sea-cliff nesting habitat for seabirds.
