Shetland is an archipelago in the north of Scotland, part of the United Kingdom, lying north of the Scottish mainland. The islands are known for rugged coastlines, strong Norse heritage and a dispersed set of settlements with Lerwick as the principal town.

Coastal bird colonies, marine wildlife and archaeological sites draw visitors; seabird cliffs and puffin colonies are common in the breeding season and there are well-preserved prehistoric and Norse remains. The landscape is a mix of moorland, crofts, and sheltered sounds used for boating and fishing.

Settlement and cultural patterns reflect Mesolithic, Neolithic and later Norse influences, with Viking settlers arriving in the early medieval period and leaving many place names and archaeological remains. Over time the islands were incorporated into the Kingdom of Scotland and later the United Kingdom, while fishing and knitwear became important local industries.

Geographically the archipelago sits off Scotland’s northern coast, roughly 160 km or so north of the Scottish mainland, with the seas of the North Atlantic and North Sea surrounding its low-lying and cliffed islands.

  • Norse heritage: A strong Norse cultural heritage is visible in place names, archaeological sites and some local traditions dating back to Viking settlement.
  • Up Helly Aa: Late January hosts the main fire festival in the capital, featuring torch-lit processions and a replica Viking galley - a major cultural event locally.

What to See #

  • Mainland: The largest island in the group contains the main town and administrative centre, with a mix of coastal cliffs, peatlands and Norse-era archaeological sites.
  • Lerwick: The administrative centre and largest town on the islands, serving as the main ferry and air links and hosting local museums and services.
  • Jarlshof: Multi-period archaeological complex with remains from the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Norse periods, demonstrating long human occupation.
  • Mousa Broch: Well-preserved Iron Age broch reaching about 13 m in height located on a small island, accessible by boat during fair weather.
  • Sumburgh Head: Sea cliffs and a lighthouse that support large seabird colonies, often visited for wildlife viewing and coastal walks.

How to Get to Shetland #

The Shetland Islands are reached by air or sea from mainland Scotland. Loganair operates scheduled flights to Sumburgh Airport from Aberdeen and other Scottish airports; NorthLink Ferries runs an overnight ferry between Aberdeen and Lerwick. Once on Shetland, local buses and car hire connect Lerwick and other settlements; road links on the main islands use the A970 and local roads.

Tips for Visiting Shetland #

  • Plan for late spring or early summer (May-June) for long daylight, seabird colonies and milder weather; many natural sites and birdwatching spots are best accessed then.
  • Travel options are limited-use scheduled flights to Sumburgh or the Aberdeen-Lerwick ferry and check timetables in advance; ferry crossings can be disrupted by weather so allow flexible time in your itinerary.
  • Rent a car or pre-book guided day tours once on island if you want to reach remote northern and outer-island sites, since public transport is sparse outside Lerwick.
