Sheshnag Lake
Lake Alpine lake in Kashmir, revered by pilgrims
An alpine lake reached from Pahalgam on Kashmir’s high trails, often visited by trekkers for mountain camping, clear water and seasonal wildflower displays.
Sheshnag Lake is an alpine lake in the Lidder Valley of Jammu and Kashmir, India, known for its clear water and mountain setting. It lies above the valley floor and is part of a sequence of high-altitude lakes visited by trekkers and pilgrims.
The lake is a common overnight or day destination on routes from the town of Pahalgam and is used as a stopping point on treks further into the surrounding alpine terrain. Visitors commonly approach by foot or pony on marked mountain trails.
Local tradition associates the lake with the serpent deity Shesha, from which the lake takes its name, giving it religious as well as scenic significance. Its role as a waypoint on trekking routes has persisted through the modern era.
Sheshnag Lake sits in the Pir Panjal range above the Lidder Valley near Pahalgam in southern Kashmir. The setting is high mountain terrain with alpine meadows and surrounding peaks.
- Access: Sits at high altitude and is commonly reached by trekking from the valley town of Pahalgam on the Lidder River.
- Cultural note: Named after the mythological serpent Shesha and noted in local tradition and pilgrimage.
Tips for Visiting Sheshnag Lake #
- Go in the high season (summer months) and aim to arrive early morning for calm water and reflections-outside of summer the road approaches can be snowbound or impassable.
- Access from the Srinagar-Leh road (Sonamarg area) as part of a day trip; start early from Srinagar to avoid afternoon traffic on the mountain passes and to secure parking at the lake access points.
- Walk both shores once you arrive: the main viewing spot gets busy, but a short circuit around the lake's edge reveals quieter viewpoints, shepherd huts and better photo angles that many day-trippers skip.
Best Time to Visit Sheshnag Lake #
Best visited in summer (June-September) when the high‑altitude lake and trails are accessible and ice-free.
