Sheosar Lake

Sheosar Lake is a high-altitude freshwater lake on the Deosai Plains in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, notable for its elevation and remote alpine setting. It is one of the principal features of the Deosai plateau and a popular destination for trekkers and nature visitors during the short summer season.

The lake is surrounded by the flat, open Deosai tundra and offers wide views and abundant wildflowers in summer; wildlife in the area includes Himalayan fauna typical of the plateau. Visitors come for day hikes, wildlife viewing and to experience the high plain environment rather than for water recreation.

The lake occupies a natural basin on the Deosai Plains and has been shaped by glacial and plateau processes. Local pastoral communities have used the surrounding plains seasonally for grazing.

Sheosar Lake lies within the Deosai region of northern Pakistan, in Gilgit-Baltistan, and is reached via routes from nearby towns such as Skardu and Astore during the summer months.

• High altitude: Sits at very high elevation, approximately 4,142 metres above sea level, making it one of the highest accessible lakes in the region.
• Seasonal access: Accessible mainly in the summer months when snow has melted; roads and trails are often closed by snow in winter and early spring.
