Shek Kwu Chau
Island Island in Hong Kong's Islands District, largely undeveloped
A small Hong Kong island south of Lantau that hosts correctional and rehabilitation facilities; public access is limited and it is not a standard tourist stop.
Shek Kwu Chau is a small island in Hong Kong’s Islands District, situated to the south of Cheung Chau. It is primarily known for housing government-run treatment and rehabilitation facilities.
The island is not developed as a recreational destination; most visitors do not travel there for tourism because the principal land use is institutional. There are limited shorelines and undeveloped coastal areas but no regular tourist infrastructure.
The island has been used by the Hong Kong government for institutional purposes in recent decades and is the site of a treatment and rehabilitation centre administered by government agencies.
Shek Kwu Chau lies southwest of Hong Kong Island in the outlying Islands District, south of Cheung Chau, and is administered as part of Hong Kong’s island groupings.
- Limited public access: The island is not a conventional tourist destination; visiting the island is restricted because a large government rehabilitation facility occupies much of the land.
What to See #
- Treatment and rehabilitation centre: A government-run residential treatment and rehabilitation facility for substance misuse and related services occupies a large portion of the island and is the island's primary land use.
