Sheikh Safi al-din Khānegāh and Shrine Ensemble in Ardabil

The Sheikh Safi al-din Khānegāh and Shrine Ensemble in Ardabil is a large historic funerary and religious complex in Ardabil, northwestern Iran, originally centered on the tomb of the Sufi leader Sheikh Safi al-Din. The complex includes ritual, residential and administrative buildings developed over several centuries.

The core shrine dates to the medieval period and was progressively enlarged, particularly during the Safavid era, when the complex acquired many of its present architectural and decorative features and became closely associated with the ruling dynasty’s ceremonial identity. Successive additions created the multi-part plan and ornamental program visible today.

The complex is located within the city of Ardabil in Ardabil Province in northwest Iran, set within the urban fabric of the city and accessible from the city’s historic centre.
