Shedd Aquarium
Museum Large indoor aquarium featuring marine exhibits and performances
Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium on the Museum Campus displays Caribbean reef, Amazon and cold-water exhibits, with scheduled feedings and educational programs popular with families and marine enthusiasts.
Shedd Aquarium is a major public aquarium on Chicago’s Museum Campus, originally opened in 1930 as a gift from John G. Shedd. It is one of the largest indoor aquariums in the world and combines permanent habitat galleries with educational programmes and temporary exhibits.
Galleries recreate tropical reefs, river systems and open-ocean habitats; notable exhibits include the Caribbean Reef, Wild Reef and Amazon-themed displays, plus a large oceanarium for marine mammals and larger animals. The aquarium’s collections include freshwater and marine fish, invertebrates, reptiles and marine mammals.
The institution has grown through several major expansions and continues to operate as a leading public aquarium and research partner in aquatic conservation.
Located on the Museum Campus along Lake Michigan near the Field Museum and Adler Planetarium in downtown Chicago, the aquarium is easily accessible from the lakefront and city transit.

Tips for Visiting Shedd Aquarium #
- Buy timed-entry or advance tickets and check show schedules before you go-Shedd's popular presentations and feeding demonstrations have limited seating and can create long lines around them.
- Visit right at opening on weekdays to see the Oceanarium and large mammals when galleries are quieter, then explore smaller exhibits later in the day when families arrive.
- Use the museum campus pedestrian routes to combine Shedd with nearby Field Museum or Adler Planetarium while avoiding the busiest single‑entrance queues; the campus layout makes short walking transfers practical.
Best Time to Visit Shedd Aquarium #
Visit on a weekday outside summer and major holidays for shorter lines and a calmer experience.
