Shechem
Archaeological Site Ancient biblical city and archaeological site in Samaria
An ancient site near modern Nablus tied to biblical narratives and the nearby Mount Gerizim; visitors explore Tell Balata’s ruins, religious landmarks and the surrounding historical landscape.
Shechem is an ancient settlement in the central hill country of historic Samaria, identified with the archaeological site Tell Balata near modern Nablus in the West Bank. The site has a long sequence of occupation stretching back to the Bronze Age.
Archaeological remains include a fortified tell with visible layers from Bronze- and Iron-Age occupation through later periods. The ruins lie immediately adjacent to the slopes of Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal, making the religious landscape a primary focus for visitors rather than large standing monuments.
Shechem was occupied in the Bronze Age and continued as an important urban centre in the Iron Age and later periods; it appears frequently in ancient Near Eastern and biblical records. Over centuries it served as a regional administrative and cultic centre and was altered and rebuilt repeatedly by successive peoples.
The tell is located immediately west of the modern built area of Nablus, between the twin ridges of Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal in the central highlands of what is today the West Bank.
- Geographic context: Sits in the valley between Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal, a setting that gives it major religious importance in Samaritan and Israelite traditions.
