Best Time to Visit Shakawe #

Shakawe is best between April and August when it's dry, cooler, and wildlife congregates around water. The wet season brings lush landscapes and boat travel but heavier rains and insects.

Wet Season (Summer)
November - March · 20 to 32 °C (68 to 90 °F)
Wet season is hot, humid, and lush with frequent afternoon storms-river levels rise and birdlife is abundant, but expect muddy tracks and insects.
Cool Dry Season (Winter)
April - August · 12 to 26 °C (54 to 79 °F)
Cool dry months are the best for wildlife viewing and comfortable days; mornings can be crisp, and roads are far more reliable.
Hot Dry Season (Pre‑wet)
September - October · 24 to 40 °C (75 to 104 °F)
Pre-wet months are very hot and dry; vegetation browns, waterholes shrink, and intense heat makes midday travel uncomfortable but good for concentrated wildlife at remaining water.

How to Get to Shakawe

Shakawe is a remote gateway to the Okavango and northern Botswana. The quickest way in is by domestic flight into Shakawe Airport (SWX); overland travel is possible but lengthy and often seasonal.

By Air

Shakawe Airport (SWX): Shakawe has a local airstrip used for regional flights and charter flights, often from Maun (MUB) or other domestic hubs; flight times from Maun are typically around 30-45 minutes. Transfers from the airstrip into town are short (minutes) by taxi or vehicle.

Maun Airport (MUB): Maun is the main regional hub for northern Botswana and Delta access; road transfer to Shakawe is long (~4-5 hours) and most visitors prefer a short domestic flight into SWX or charter flights arranged through safari operators.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no passenger rail service to Shakawe.

Bus / Road: Overland travel by private 4x4 or long-distance coach from Maun or Kasane is possible but can be long and depends on seasonal road conditions; local minibuses provide short-distance transport in the area.
