How to Get to Shakawe#
Shakawe is a remote gateway to the Okavango and northern Botswana. The quickest way in is by domestic flight into Shakawe Airport (SWX); overland travel is possible but lengthy and often seasonal.
Shakawe Airport (SWX): Shakawe has a local airstrip used for regional flights and charter flights, often from Maun (MUB) or other domestic hubs; flight times from Maun are typically around 30-45 minutes. Transfers from the airstrip into town are short (minutes) by taxi or vehicle.
Maun Airport (MUB): Maun is the main regional hub for northern Botswana and Delta access; road transfer to Shakawe is long (~4-5 hours) and most visitors prefer a short domestic flight into SWX or charter flights arranged through safari operators.
Train: There is no passenger rail service to Shakawe.
Bus / Road: Overland travel by private 4x4 or long-distance coach from Maun or Kasane is possible but can be long and depends on seasonal road conditions; local minibuses provide short-distance transport in the area.

- Car / 4x4 - Overland travel is possible from Maun or Kasane but involves long drives and potentially rough roads-four-wheel drive is recommended off the main roads. Useful if carrying heavy gear or travelling with a group.
- Local taxis / shuttle - Local taxis and hotel-run shuttles handle transfers between the airstrip, town and riverfront lodges. Coordinate with accommodation for pickups to avoid waiting.
