Walkers and visitors come to inspect the exposed walls, ruined towers and the layout of the former fortified town, which is compact and approachable on foot. The ruins offer close-up views of masonry, collapsed structures and rock-cut features rather than intact buildings.

The settlement served as a fortified town and strongpoint in the medieval period and was destroyed during the Mongol campaigns of the early 13th century under the armies of Genghis Khan. The site has remained as a ruin since that destruction and forms part of the historical record of the Bamyan valley.
