The Shahdagh range is a section of the Greater Caucasus located in northeastern Azerbaijan, containing some of the country’s highest and most rugged peaks. The range is a focal point for mountain recreation and conservation in Azerbaijan.
The landscape includes steep alpine ridges, high-slope valleys and areas of alpine and subalpine vegetation. Recreational facilities and a national park on the Azerbaijani side support skiing in winter and hiking, wildlife viewing and mountain tourism in summer.
Geographically the range occupies the northern part of Azerbaijan close to the border with the Russian republic of Dagestan and forms part of the main Caucasus chain.

How to Get to Shahdagh range #
Shahdagh is in northeastern Azerbaijan. The most common access is from the city of Qusar or the Shahdagh Mountain Resort (roughly 150-200 km north of Baku by road). From Qusar, local roads and tour operators run transfers into the park area; private vehicles can use the M1 and regional mountain roads.
Tips for Visiting Shahdagh range #
- Hire a local guide for high-altitude routes; maps often show contour lines but not local hazards like landslide-prone slopes.
- Acclimatize gradually - many summits in the range sit above 2,000-3,000 m.
- The best wildlife viewing (quail, Caucasian chamois) is at dawn and dusk in alpine meadows.
