Shah-i-Zinda
Archaeological Site Historic necropolis of richly tiled medieval mausoleums
Shah-i-Zinda in Samarkand is a burial complex of painted mausoleums dating mainly to the Timurid period. Visitors study glazed tile decoration, layered courtyards and the site’s funerary architecture.
Shah-i-Zinda is a funerary complex in Samarkand consisting of a series of mausoleums and funerary structures aligned along a narrow avenue. The site contains some of the finest surviving tilework from the medieval period in Central Asia.
Visitors walk a stepped, linear necropolis street lined with adjoining tomb chambers whose facades display dense patterns of glazed tiles, ceramic mosaics and carved portals; many of the most elaborate structures date from the 14th and 15th centuries. The visual continuity of richly coloured tiling and the sequence of small domed mausoleums make the site a major draw for students of Timurid art and architecture.
The necropolis accumulated over several centuries with initial burials and shrines established in the medieval period and major construction episodes during the Timurid era; it served as a burial place for local dignitaries and religious figures. Successive restorations and additions from the 14th century onward produced the ensemble visible today.
Shah-i-Zinda lies on the northern outskirts of Samarkand’s historic core, on the slope of a hill near other Timurid monuments and within a short distance of the Registan area.
- Architectural highlight: The necropolis is arranged along a narrow street up a hill and is particularly noted for its richly glazed tile facades and polychrome mosaics dating mainly to the medieval Timurid period.
- Cultural significance: Believed local tradition links the site to a saintly figure, making it both an architectural ensemble and a site of pilgrimage.
