The Shah Abdol-Azim Shrine is an imamzadeh complex in the historic city of Rey, Tehran province, centered on the tomb of Abdol-Azim al-Hasani. It is a major Shia pilgrimage site with a multi-building complex that has developed over several centuries.

The complex’s principal attraction is the domed mausoleum and its ornate interior decoration, including tilework and mirror work typical of Iranian sacred architecture. Visitors also use the paved courtyards, iwans and covered prayer halls for ziyarat and communal ceremonies. The site includes ancillary rooms that have housed collections and a library, and it functions as a living religious centre with regular worship and pilgrimage activity.

The shrine marks the burial place of Abdol-Azim al-Hasani, a descendant of Hasan ibn Ali who lived in the early Islamic centuries; the tomb became a focus for worship and building activity in later medieval and early modern periods. The complex was expanded and redecorated in successive eras, notably during Safavid and Qajar times, resulting in the mix of domes, minarets, tiled iwans and courtyards seen today.

The shrine stands in the Rey district, on the southern outskirts of greater Tehran, within Tehran province. It is immediately accessible from Tehran by road and is one of the principal historic-religious sites in the Rey area.

  • Location note: Located in the historic district of Rey just south of Tehran, the shrine is one of the major Shia pilgrimage sites in the Tehran region.
  • Visitor conduct: The complex combines a gilded dome and minarets with tiled iwans and mirror-work interiors, so modest visiting dress and respectful behaviour are expected inside.

What to See #

  • Mausoleum (main tomb): The domed mausoleum that houses the burial chamber of Abdol-Azim al-Hasani, the focal point for pilgrims and the complex's main interior decoration.
  • Main courtyards and iwans: A series of paved courtyards and iwans that connect the mausoleum with adjacent prayer halls, visitor areas and ancillary buildings.
  • Ancillary buildings and collections: Smaller ancillary buildings that have served as a library, museum and administrative rooms at different times; some carry Qajar- and Safavid-era decorative work.
