Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain

Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain is a public monument in Piccadilly Circus, central London, erected in 1893 to commemorate the social reforms of the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury. The fountain and figure form a compact landmark at the junction of Piccadilly and Regent Street.

The monument’s most recognizable element is the small winged figure atop the fountain, popularly known as Eros though originally intended to represent Anteros. The fountain sits on the traffic island at Piccadilly Circus and serves as a longstanding focal point and meeting place in central London.

The memorial was created by sculptor Alfred Gilbert and unveiled in 1893 to honour Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury. The figure was cast in aluminium, an early use of the metal in statuary, and the work was presented as a civic commemoration of the earl’s philanthropic activities.

The fountain stands in the heart of the West End, on the pedestrianised island at Piccadilly Circus, surrounded by shops, theatres and busy thoroughfares. It is immediately accessible from nearby Tube stations and sits at the crossroads of several central London streets.
