Sewell Mining Town is an early 20th-century company town in the Andes of central Chile, established to accommodate workers serving the nearby El Teniente copper mine. The settlement is noted for its dense, terraced layout of worker housing and company facilities clinging to a steep mountainside.
Sewell was developed by mining interests in the early 20th century to support large-scale underground copper extraction at El Teniente, creating a purpose-built community combining housing, services and mine-related infrastructure. Over the 20th century modernization of mining operations led to gradual depopulation and consolidation of facilities, leaving many original buildings intact as a historic complex.
The site sits high in the Andes within Chile’s O’Higgins Region, above the El Teniente mine; it is accessed from the valley towns that serve the central Chile mining district.
